A Musical Retrospective with the BrSO Flutissimo and Bailey Street Brass

As part of East Bridgewater’s Bicentennial celebration, the Brockton Symphony Orchestra Chamber Players will present A Musical Retrospective with the BrSO Flutissimo and Bailey Street Brass on Saturday, September 30, 2023 in the East Bridgewater Jr/Sr High School Auditorium at 7pm.

BrSO Flutissimo, four Brockton Symphony flutists, was founded in 2017 by BrSO flute/piccolo player, Lorrie Hassan. The quartet performs in Brockton and the surrounding areas, including the Brockton Public Library Music Series, Brockton Symphony Chamber Concerts, the Chinese New Year celebration in Quincy and various local events.  The group includes, Carolyn Baughman, flute; Susan Caplan, flute & alto flute; Barbara Clement, flute & piccolo; and Lorrie Hassan, flute & bass flute. The works performed will range from California Dreamin’ to Umoja to If I Fell In Love With You.

Carolyn Baughman is a flutist and Board member of the Brockton Symphony Orchestra.  She has studied flute with Philip Gowen, Robert Cole (Philadelphia Orchestra), Robert Willoughby (Oberlin Conservatory), and Dr. Walter Haseke (Mozarteum, Salzburg, Austria).  She is a graduate of the Oberlin Conservatory of Music and holds a Master of Music degree from the University of Michigan.  Her professional career includes local ensemble and solo flute performances, as well as teaching private flute and piano students.  She has taught instrumental and choral music, and mathematics, in public schools in Michigan, Ohio, and Massachusetts.  She served as Director of Music in the Sharon, MA, schools.  Carolyn is listed in “Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers.”

Susan Caplan is principal flutist of the Brockton Symphony and a member of the Wellesley Symphony, Quincy Symphony, and MIT Summer Philharmonic Orchestras. She has performed with Newton Symphony, New Philharmonia Orchestra, Savoyard Light Opera Company, and the Sudbury Savoyards.  Ms. Caplan’s teachers include Steven Finley, Doriot Anthony Dwyer, Elinor Preble, and William Grass.  Susan is the BrSO Chairperson and is on the Board of the James Pappoutsakis Memorial Fund.  She teaches private flute lessons and plays chamber music locally.  Susan received a Bachelor of Arts from Wellesley College, where she received the Billings Prize in Performance.   Susan loves all kinds of music, art, hiking, reading, science, museums, running, playing Scrabble and Boggle, singing harmony, and cooking.

Barbara Clement plays second flute and piccolo in the Cape Ann, Quincy and Melrose Symphonies, and subs in the Brockton Symphony. Prior to moving to Massachusetts, she was a member of the Cheyenne Symphony (Wyoming) and Little Rock Symphony (Arkansas). Her teachers include Katherine Kemler, Samuel Baron, and William Bennett. Barbara has taught flute and music theory at Eastern Nazarene College, Louisiana State University, and the University of Wyoming, and has performed in various chamber ensembles in Wyoming, Colorado, Louisiana, Arkansas, and Massachusetts. She loves teaching and maintains a music studio of primarily flute and piano students at the Southeast School of Music in South Easton.

Lorrie Hassan, flutist, bass flute and piccolo, is the founding member of BrSO Flutissimo. She performs regularly with the Tri-County Symphonic Band, Brockton Symphony Orchestra, and Our Lady of the Light Band. She has played with Quincy Symphony, Melrose Symphony, and Falmouth Chamber Players Orchestra. She has taught flute and piano on the South Shore of Massachusetts for 40 years.

Bailey Street Brass was formed in July of 2014 to perform the National Anthem at the FCBL All-Star game, hosted by the Brockton Rox. The quintet members are mostly current and former Brockton Symphony brass players. They include Wayne King, trumpet; Joseph Donohue, trumpet; Rachel Daly, horn; Daniel Hatchfield, trombone; and Natalie Mundis, tuba. The works performed will range from Alexander's Ragtime Band to The Muppet Show Theme to the theme from Game of Thrones.

Wayne King, trumpet, received his BA in Music and MS in Mathematics/Computer Science from The University of Massachusetts, Lowell, where he studied trumpet with Natalo Paella and privately with Leon Merian. Professionally, he studied with Charles Schlueter and James Pandolfi. Wayne plays with Brockton Symphony (Principal since 2007), Wellesley Symphony (sub), Disco Dream and Bridgewater Antiphonal Brass. Wayne is a founding member and leader of Bailey Street Brass.

Wayne also plays in musical theater orchestra pits including The Company Theatre as well as several High School and community theater productions. He participated in the Chosen Vale International Trumpet Seminar in 2010 where he played in a masterclass for Thomas Stevens and in 2012 where he played in a masterclass for Mark Gould.

Joseph Donohue is an active trumpet player from Southeastern Massachusetts. A native of Brockton, MA, Joseph has studied with Vincent Macrina of Brockton High School and Eric Berlin of the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Formerly a trumpet player with the Charles River Wind Ensemble, Joseph now performs as second trumpet with the Brockton Symphony and second trumpet with the Bailey Street Brass Quintet, as well as many freelance performances. As a craftsman, Joseph works in the final assembly department of S.E. Shires Custom Brass Instruments. When not involved with music, Joseph can be found tackling DIY projects and hanging out with his German Shepherd, Odin.

Rachel Daly, horn, received her Bachelor of Music degree from the Manhattan School of Music in horn performance and a Master of Arts degree from Columbia University Teachers College in music education. She studied horn under David Jolley, William Brown, Laura Klock, and George Lessard. Rachel also studied conducting with Dino Anagnost from the Little Orchestra Society of Lincoln Center.

Rachel is the founding member and Director of Hornithology Ensemble, a professional horn quartet that, along with performing, runs a large horn ensemble in the summer months for students of all ages. Rachel is an active freelancer in New England and has performed with many of the area's professional orchestras, chamber groups, and musical theater orchestra pits.

Along with a large private studio, she is also a part-time faculty member at Bridgewater State University, teaching horn, Introduction to Western Classical Music, and Music Fundamentals. She is also the horn instructor at Boston College. Rachel taught and performed at the Interharmony International Music Festival during the last two summers in Italy.

Daniel Hatchfield, trombone, is a high school band director from East Bridgewater, Massachusetts.  He teaches the Grade 7-8 Band, the 9-12 Band, piano, and guitar courses.  He also is the director of the Jr. Jazz Band.  Mr. Hatchfield received his Undergraduate degree in Music Education at Bridgewater State University, and he received his Master’s degree in Music Education at American Band College of Central Washington State University.  Aside from music, he loves traveling with his family.

Natalie Mundis, tuba (guest), is pursuing her Master in Music Performance at Boston University studying with Mike Roylance. She received her Bachelor of Music Performance from the University of Massachusetts Amherst in May of 2023 studying with John Bottomley. As a performer, Natalie is “eager, tenacious, takes risks with confidence, and constantly raises intelligent questions. She can play a variety of styles well and makes any group she plays with sound better” (Dr. Matthew Westgate, 2023).

In addition to being a musician she also works in music production and administration. Originally from York, Pennsylvania, she lives on campus at BU where she is a Graduate Resident Assistant. Natalie also loves to cook, paint, and spend time with her cats.
