This Is Only a Test

Town of East Bridgewater Informs Residents of National Emergency Alert System Tests Being Conducted Wednesday, October 4

*These Tests Are Not An Emergency*

EAST BRIDGEWATER — The Town of East Bridgewater is informing residents that a national test of emergency alert systems will take place on Wednesday. Test messages will be sent to all TVs, radios and cellphones.

Both tests will begin at approximately 2:20 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 4.

The tests are being conducted by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). The messages will test the capabilities of the Emergency Alert System (EAS) and Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA). Both systems are crucial to warn the public about emergencies, particularly those on the national level.

The WEA portion of the test will be directed to all consumer cellphones. The test message will display in either English or in Spanish, depending on the language settings of the device. The EAS portion of the test will be sent to radios and televisions.
The WEA test message that will appear on cellphones will read:
“THIS IS A TEST of the National Wireless Emergency Alert System. No action is needed.”

All wireless phones should receive the message only once.

The EAS test message that will be sent to televisions and radios will state:

“This is a nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System, issued by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, covering the United States from 14:20 to 14:50 hours ET. This is only a test. No action is required by the public."
