Senior Tax Workoff Packets Available October 3rd

East Bridgewater will once again be offering some seniors the opportunity to participate in the Senior Property Tax Workoff Program. If you have participated in the past, remember that you must re-apply every year. Acceptance into the program requires that we have an appropriate placement available. Consideration will be given to new people first, though if there is room, repeat participants are welcome. In compliance with the law, the credit wil be applied directly to your real estate tax bill. If you plan on moving or selling your home during this tax workoff cycle, please do not apply. No checks will be issued to participants.

Purpose: The Senior Tax Workoff Program is a program allowing the Town of East Bridgewater the opportunity to utilize the knowledge and skills of its senior residents in exchange for credit toward the residents’ property tax bill. The purposes of this program are to enhance municipal services and alleviate senior residents’ tax burdens. A qualified resident will be credited a maximum abatement of $1,100 per household.

Eligibility Requirements:

1. Must be 60 by July 1, 2023

2. Must be the owner of record (or spouse) of the property and pay real estate taxes to the town of E. Bridgewater. Only one resident of a property can participate in any given year. You must reside at the property.

3. Must have been a permanent resident of the town since before July 1, 2022

4. Must have employable skills that are an appropriate match for the job

5. Must produce a current real estate tax bill

6. Must commit to 100 hours between December 1, 2022 and November 30, 2023 and must complete the 100 hours to get the credit.

7. Participants must also meet the total income guidelines for 2021 established by the state’s Senior Circuit Breaker Tax Credit: $62,000 per year for a single filer; $78,000 for a head of household; and $93,000 for taxpayers filing jointly.

Total Income = Massachusetts adjusted gross income

plus: all other income excluded from Massachusetts gross income (These amounts include income from social security, retirement, pension or annuities, cash public assistance, tax-exempt interest and dividends, short-term and long-term capital losses, certain capital gains, income from a partnership or trust not otherwise included in the taxpayer's Massachusetts AGI.

These amounts also include gifts, returns of capital reported on Schedule C and gross receipts from any other source).

Earnings: $1,100 per 100 hours (less Medicare contribution) will be credited for all jobs. New participants must report to the treasurer’s office with their Social Security card and driver’s license to complete employee forms before they can begin their assignment.

Prior participants may re-apply understanding that preference is given to those who did not participate in the present fiscal year.

A complete description of the program will be included in the application packet. Packets may be picked up at the COA beginning Monday, October 3, 2022 and must be returned by noon on Friday, October 14, 2022. No late applications will be accepted.
